Exercise 1: Reducing Relative Clauses to Participial Phrases

Reduce the relative clauses to participial phrases.

  1. The boy who is running in the park is my cousin.
  2. The letters that were sent yesterday arrived this morning.
  3. The woman who works in the bakery is my neighbor.
  4. The article which was published last week caused a lot of controversy.
  5. The dog that is barking loudly belongs to my friend.
  6. The presentation that was given by the guest speaker was very informative.
  7. The cake which is sitting on the table looks delicious.
  8. The house that was painted last month looks beautiful.
  9. The man who is carrying the suitcase is a famous actor.
  10. The road which was damaged by the storm has been repaired.

Exercise 2: Reducing Relative Clauses with Present Participles

Change the relative clauses to present participles where possible.

  1. The students who are preparing for the exam are nervous.
  2. The company that is expanding rapidly is opening new branches.
  3. The woman who is sitting by the window is reading a book.
  4. The children who are playing in the garden are my nieces and nephews.
  5. The machine which is operating now is very efficient.
  6. The athlete who is competing in the race is very talented.
  7. The tree that is growing in the garden is an oak.
  8. The people who are waiting in line seem frustrated.
  9. The cat that is sleeping on the couch is very cute.
  10. The teacher who is explaining the lesson is very experienced.

Exercise 3: Reducing Relative Clauses with Past Participles

Rewrite the sentences by reducing the relative clauses to past participles where appropriate.

  1. The book that was written by a famous author is on the table.
  2. The emails that were sent yesterday have been read.
  3. The building which was destroyed by the fire will be rebuilt.
  4. The car that was stolen last week has been found.
  5. The picture which was taken at the event looks amazing.
  6. The essay that was written by the student was well-researched.
  7. The bridge which was damaged in the flood is under repair.
  8. The shirt that was bought at the mall is too small.

Reduce the relative clauses in the sentences below using either present participles or past participles as appropriate.
